The magic torch
A light of their own to explore the dark at their pace
Learning through play
A torch that is THEIRS changes the rules of the dark: it is no longer something happening to them, it is a territory they explore with their own light. In daylight you play at visiting dark corners and checking there is the same as always inside; then, at lowering the light in steps, with a guardian breath at each step. Your little one practises facing things in miniature, which is how you face them for real.
By age: At 2-3, daytime exploring and soft dimness; at 4-6, the game of switching off a little more each time.
What you’ll need
- ·A small torch that is theirs
- ·Optional: cellophane and an elastic band to give it colour
Getting ready
Batteries in and, if you like, cellophane to "paint" the light. Two minutes.
How it goes, step by step
- 1
Hand them their guardian torch: only they handle it
- 2
In daylight, explore dark corners of the house and check there is the same as always
- 3
Play at lowering the light in steps: first half, then a little more
- 4
At each step, one long guardian breath
- 5
Repeat the phrase as you switch off: "I switch on my light, I breathe, I am the guardian"
Safety
Watch out for button batteries: compartment well shut and out of reach. Never shine the light in the eyes.
Your tool for the moment
Stay a step behind their courage, not ahead of it: they decide how much goes off today. If they step back, it is not a failure — you go to the step before and that's that.
The phrase they keep
«I switch on my light. I breathe. I am the guardian.»
The pedagogical why
Fear of the dark is developmentally normal from 3 to 6 and eases with gradual exposure and a sense of control: a dim light the child handles and approaching in steps work better than avoiding all darkness.
Honestly: Gradual means weeks, not one afternoon: the torch opens the way, and your little one sets the pace.
